If My Child Has Cavities, Can't I Just Wait Until They Fall Out... After All They Are Baby Teeth?

Most parents wonder if their child needs to be seen by the dentist when they haven't yet gotten their permanent teeth yet. After all, they think, those teeth are only there temporarily and will fall out as soon as their child gets their adult teeth.
This is a major No No. You have to realize that cavities involved, weather it is on primary (baby) teeth or permanent (adult) teeth, are still composed of bacteria. And bacteria has a way of eating away the tooth and jumping from one tooth to another. So just to simplify this even more, lets look at what are the possible problems that can accur from cavities growing on baby teeth.

Cavities can eat their way all the way to the pulp of the baby tooth and cause a lot of pain. After all, baby teeth are no different than permanent teeth as far as their composition. They still have enamel, dentin, pulp and roots. So if the cavity is big enough, they will cause pain
  1. When a cavity is formed, it has a way of deforming the tooth. The teeth may seem darker with visible holes and odor.

  2. Cavities are bacteria that can jump from one tooth to another. This means that if a baby tooth with cavities are not restored, the bacteria from the baby tooth has a way of infecting the teeth around it, which may even involve permanent teeth if the child has a mixed dentition. This meanse, at around age 6, kids start erupting their first permanent teeth while still having their baby teeth. All the way until age 11-12, the kids still have a mixed dentition. So from age 6 to 12, the cavities from baby teeth have a way of infecting the adult teeth as well.

  3. Cavities that have involved the pulp of the tooth may cause pulpal infection and abcess. This means that the baby tooth is no longer fixable and it needs to be taken out. This may cause two problems. One, the infection under the baby tooth may deform the newly forming adult teeth right underneath it. And two, if a space is now open where the tooth was removed due to infection, the teeth might shift and cause problems when the adult tooth is about to erupt. So if there is no space left, the tooth may erupt sideways or even get impacted and never come out.

Therefore, it is a big NO NO to wait for baby teeth to come out on their own. They still will fall out on their own, there's no question about that, but the damage will be all done by than.

So make an appointment for your child for an intial check up and reutine recalls at Adult and Kid's Dental Care. Call (818)881-6761 for an appointment.

  1. Even I believed the same when I kid got cavities. I didn't give a much importance to it. Thought that those teeth will fall off eventually, but it got worst and had to go for treatment at a nearby dental clinic (www.phelandental.com). Dentist told me about the seriousness of the condition and after that I never took it easily when it comes about dental health.

  2. I remember thinking the exact same thing when I had baby teeth. I got quite a few cavities when I was younger and hated getting them fixed because of the shot. I used to want the dentist to just leave them because I knew they would fall out sooner or later. After reading this article I am so glad they didn't leave the m. http://abledentalgroup.com/

  3. I never realized that the bacteria could just from one tooth to another, but it really makes sense. I had a couple of cavities on my baby teeth when I was little that I got drilled. When they fell out I always thought that it was pointless that I had them drilled in the first place. This really answered a lot of questions that I have had for years. http://www.bitedental.com

  4. I didn't realize that baby teeth had to be taken care of like regular teeth. I just sort of thought you waited until they fell out, and then worried about them getting cavities. It seems like it would be painful to not fill the cavities. http://www.riverdalenydental.com

  5. I had this exact question for years. It seemed like it would be simpler and cheaper to wait for the baby teeth to fall out. I didn't realize there were so many potential problems, or how painful they could be. I wouldn't want my kids to be in pain because I hadn't gotten their cavities removed.

  6. My friend’s child was just 4 year old when she had her first cavity. At first they ignored it, thinking it would go off with the teeth. But unfortunately the cavity grew and she had to go through root canal. Her doctor said that cavities should have been treated at the time when the it was discovered.Screams of the kid was unbearable for the parents but they were extremely helpless. A proper dental care routine has to be followed when it comes to kids, and it is the responsibility of the parents to give them right dental care at right time.

  7. I can't imagine making one of my children wait with cavities in their teeth until they fall out and the permanent ones come in. I'm actually going to be taking one of my sons in to his dentist to get a cavity taken care of later this week. He's been dealing with a lot of discomfort so far, and I would hate to make him sit through that any longer than he has to.

    1. I agree, I couldn't make a kid wait until their tooth fell out if they had a cavity. There are just too many problems that can come from leaving a cavity alone for too long. Baby teeth can take a really long time to fall out, and some need to be pulled because they won't come out on their own. It just doesn't make much sense to leave something untreated because you're waiting for that to happen.

  9. I didn't know that some people don't have their children's cavities filled! I guess I can see how they might think it's ok because they are baby teeth and will fall out if they don't really understand what a cavity is. I's so glad that you cleared this up for anyone who doesn't understand. It is very important for children to take good care of their teeth and for parents to help them! Thanks for sharing!

  10. In case of children, cavity problem is very common, but it should not be ignored. As mentioned in the post one tooth cavity can pass to another teeth and it is not good. Its better to see a nearest dentist for check up.

  12. I definitely would not want my kid's to have cavities in their teeth even if they were just baby teeth and they were just going to fall out anyway. You need to take them into the dentist and have them take care of things before they do some damage to their gums. You need to make sure that you take great care of their health.

  14. I didn't know that bacteria from teeth could move from tooth to tooth. I have a little girl and she hasn't lost her teeth yet. The only problem is that she has a cavity. I'm glad I looked this up because I was going to let it sit there until it fell out. I need to make an appointment with my dentist quick.

  20. We took my son to the dentist the other day and found out that he has a cavity. He still has his baby teeth so we were thinking they would just fall out, so do we need to get it fixed. We don't have a lot of money right now so it would be convenient if we didn't have to get if fixed. But if it is necessary, we of course are going to do it. We just wanted to hear other peoples opinions. http://www.highlandadvanceddentalcare.com

  21. I figured this was a pretty serious no no, but it's still nice to know the reasoning. I admit, I thought the same thing when my baby got a cavity. I would have gotten it fixed anyway, though, because I could tell he was in pain. | http://www.vanyodentistry.com

  23. It is really interesting that damage can still be done to your child's oral health when they are still little. I would have thought that damage to your baby teeth wouldn't have an impact on your future teeth. That is definitely one reason why it is so important for you to teach your kids good oral habits. You want to make sure to help them develop good habits at a young age. Those habits will stick with them for their whole lives.
